Pink Guava and Strawberry Smoothie

May Ly

Guavas have to be my all time favourite fruit. I remember going to the nursery with my dad when I was about 7 years old and buying our first guava tree. It is still thriving in their backyard and produces the most fragrant and delicious fruit. They recently added the pink variety a few years ago. Store bought guavas never matched the taste as our homegrown ones back in Australia, but since I moved to Vietnam we have been so lucky to have these delicious guavas available in abundance.

On our way back from our trip to Ben Tre, I picked up 10 kilos of pink guavas at a road side stall. They were so fresh, fragrant and crunchy. We ate a whole bunch on the bus, shared some and left some on the bench to soften and ripen further. Pink guavas are amazing, the taste and texture changes as it ripens and softens. I love them both in their crunchy and firm state and in their soft and juicy state. The soft and juicy ones are perfect to blend up into a yummy smoothie.

Smoothies (known as sinh to in Vietnamese) are huge over here in Vietnam. It is a really popular way to consume all the fresh tropical fruits, blended with ice for a super-refreshing cold drink in the all day humid heat. Back home in Australia, if you live in Sydney, you can venture out to Cabramatta to experience a yummy fruit shake. I highly recommend this! Otherwise it is also very easy to make your own fruit smoothies at home, you just need a magic bullet or blender, ice and fresh fruit.
